Berkeley Greenwood - Chair of Trustees

Berkeley GreenwoodBerkeley is a government relations adviser who specialises in healthcare policy. He has a background as a political researcher and was twice a parliamentary candidate. An economist by training, he has a particular interest in healthcare access and cost efficacy issues and the policy debate that underlies these. His previous work in this area includes renal disease.

Prof Thomas Powles, Consultant Medical Oncologist

Prof Thomas PowlesProfessor Thomas Powles MBBS MD MRCP is a Senior Lecturer in Urological Malignancy at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He trained in Medical Oncology at Imperial College, and his thesis focused on the mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapy and targeted therapy in urological cancers. He leads both a laboratory based group and clinical trials group, which run a number of national clinical trials in renal and bladder cancer. He is involved in national and international organisations in renal cancer including the NCRN, AUA, EORTC and ESMO.

Professor Miss Maxine Tran - PhD FRCS (Urol) Associate Professor in Renal Cancer

Maxine Tran is a Senior Lecturer in Renal Cancer Surgery and Honorary Consultant Urological surgeon and has been drawn to kidney cancer ever since her first post as a junior doctor in a urology department almost two decades ago. With a special interest in rare inherited kidney cancer syndromes Maxine was awarded a competitive MRC clinical training fellowship for her PhD research at Imperial College London (2003-6). She was then appointed as clinical lecturer in urology at Cambridge University Hospital.

Maxine is dedicated to improving the knowledge of the biology underlying kidney cancer. This will ultimately translate to earlier diagnoses, better management and wider treatment options for patients.

Maxine has been awarded grants from the MRC, Academy of Medical Sciences, Addenbrookes’ Charitable Trust. Her current research is being supported by Kidney Cancer UK, Facing up 2 Kidney cancer, The Royal Free Hospital Charity and St Peter’s Trust.

Dr Ekaterini Boleti - MD PhD FRCP Consultant Medical Oncologist


Dr Katia Boleti, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Boleti is a consultant medical oncologist with a special interest in lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies as well renal cell carcinoma. She is also interested in novel therapies such as immunotherapy and new molecular targeted agents.

Professor Grant D Stewart - Professor of Surgical Oncology

Mr Grant Stewart of the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge

Grant Stewart BSc MBChB PhD Edin, MA Cantab, FRCSEd (Urol) is Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Cambridge and an Honorary Urological Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Grant has a specific interest in optimising management of patients with initially localised renal cancer, an area of great need within the disease. He is particularly interested in the concepts of early detection and screening for kidney cancer as well as peri-surgical systemic therapy to optimise survival. In order to make practice changing developments Professor Stewart has developed a range of interlinked clinical trials and translational research which are all underpinned by clinical excellence in managing renal cancer at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. To deliver on the above goals, Grant coordinates the Cambridge Renal Cancer Collaboration (CamRenCan) a group of over 40 clinicians, translational researchers and basic scientists across the Cambridge Biomedical Campus with a shared interest in renal cancer research. Professor Stewart is also Programme Lead for Urological Malignancies at CRUK Cambridge Centre.

Dr Natalie Charnley FRCR MRCP - Consultant in Clinical Oncology

Natalie Charnley 2 SQDr. Natalie Charnley obtained her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh medical school where she also obtained a Bsc(Hons) in immunology. She did her oncology training in London and Leeds.  Her MD at the University of Manchester Wolfson Molecular imaging centre investigated PET markers of tumour biology and response to anticancer treatment.

Dr. Charnley has been a Consultant Oncologist at Royal Preston Hospital for 11 years. She treats patients with kidney, bladder and prostate cancer.  Her research interests include novel imaging to predict response in patients with renal cancer. She is a member of the NCRI renal systemic therapies group and the educational lead for the oncology trainees at Royal Preston hospital.

Mr Gren Oades - Consultant Urological Surgeon

Gren Oades Trustee

Currently based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, Gren brings a wealth of experience of NHS Scotland along with his knowledge of the Scottish kidney cancer landscape to our Board of Trustees.

Starting as an undergraduate in Edinburgh, Gren trained in general surgery in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne before completing an MD the University of London. He returned to Scotland in 2002 where he completed his urological training. 

He has an interest in renal cancer and minimally invasive surgical treatments, is a member of the NCRI (National Cancer Research Institute) Renal Cancer Surgical subgroup and is involved with several national and international medical trials. Gren has previously chaired the West of Scotland Managed Clinical Network for Urological Cancers and, with three colleagues, provided tertiary referral services for the West of Scotland.

Geraldine Fox - Patient Trustee

Geraldine Fox Trustee Geraldine spent 18 years in the private sector before joining the Civil Service in 1998 and developed her skill set over a number of years to include IT support, business and project management, before becoming a Category Manager within the Crown Commercial Service, an executive agency of the Cabinet Office.

In 2014 Geraldine was diagnosed with kidney cancer and, following a nephrectomy, decided to take advantage of a voluntary exit scheme to allow her to care for a family member and, through Kidney Cancer UK, support other patients and carers. 

Geraldine is very active in her voluntary work with the charity, being a member our Kidney Cancer UK Accord, leading our Patient Advisory Committees and actively sharing her own kidney cancer experience to help others. Geraldine will have a watching brief over all elements of patient engagement with the Charity

Nicholas Cox, Barrister

Nicholas Cox has been a chancery barrister since 1992. As a member of the Attorney General’s ‘A’ Panel of Counsel he also advises and represents the Government in high value and sensitive disputes and sits as an arbitrator. He has an MA in Law from St Edmund Hall, Oxford and an MBA from Warwick Business School. In his spare time he runs the field archery club in Surrey where he shoots with James Whale.

Surgeon Commander Jonathan Perry – Consultant Radiologist

Jon PerrySurgeon Commander Jonathan Neil Perry MB ChB BA(Open)Hons FRCR RN is a Consultant Radiologist at Hospital Unit in Peterborough formerly seconded there from the Ministry of Defence . Jon has a special interest in interventional radiology, vascular intervention, uroradiology and is experienced in many radiological modalities, including plain film, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and CT.

Jon currently holds a post as a Recognised Clinical Teacher for Cambridge University Medical School. His military career has involved working as a medical officer on board a nuclear submarine and consequently provided him with a detailed knowledge of occupational medicine, together with teaching him the importance of teamwork. Jon’s military career has seen him in active service is Kosovo, Kuwait, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. Socially Jon is a keen Lawn Tennis player and follower of England Rugby Team. He is also a member of the parents’ choir of Kings’ College School in Cambridge.

Chris Thomas FIMI

Chris Thomas editChris acts as Financial Advisor to the Board of Trustees. He is a chartered accountant bringing a wealth of experience from the public and private sectors, as well as charity finance. Chris is the finance director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation and its subsidiary companies.
